Integrate Packet Radio with GeoChat
The Amateur Radio community has an APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting system) visit http://aprs.fi for a quick view. Basically Map based locations with SMS messages but they fly over the amateur radio frequencies and do not rely on cell towers, and they also get to the internet via gateways. Same idea here. But they also overlay weather information from the thousands of stations out there. So being able to integrate this data with GeoChat would be value added, etc.

To be honest I need to learn more about packet radio but this is a requirement I've heard from many. I will reach out to Craig- My initial hope would be to allow messages to be sent via APRS and they all get overlaid into GeoChat (along with the users location). This would seem to be a nice starting point and evolve it from there.

Where did you have in mind the integration taking place? On the server side? i.e. APRS still delivered via amateur radio, but overlaid with geochat posts on a shared map?
If you don't have a more available resource, ask Craig Anderson for suggestions. He's done a substantial amount of development with APRS including setting it up for a utility to track service vehicles over their business radios. He probably knows others doing it. He is also a member of the CMU DMI working group and my colleague at SCEWN.org.

Thanks Luke. Are you suggesting integrating packet radio locations with a user profile e.g. to update the position (and then send messages via normal SMS?) that could be done easily by someone with APRS experience and very basic programming knowledge. Any volunteers you know?
