  1. when posting new coordinates by sms it is not always possible to have the right address. e.g. in case of floodings the name of the street maybe it is not available. As in the new phones - android or iphone - it is possible to have the exact location through gps it could be possible to develop a very simple application that "copies" the lat and long into a new sms.

We are very aware of this, obviously. The first step – in the ongoing release in september- is to finalize the APIs (http and SMS) that will simplify developing these sort of apps.
There is now an open source app for android at smslocation.googlecode.com and one for iPhone at iengage.googlephone.com

  2. Open Street Maps is an open source community mapping tool. The map quality varies, but in some areas they are very good. It would be nice to have it as option to use OpenStreet maps instead of Google Maps. http://www.openstreetmap.org/

  3. Build a client for android that interacts with the GPS and lets me get back basic user information (Like iEngage for the iPhone http://code.google.com/p/iengage/)

  4. Allow users to see the exact dates of group activity: geocoded messages, replies, conversation threads, date group member joined, etc. instead of the number of days ago the activity occurred.

  6. I just heard from someone setting up a farm price information program in Cameroon that he NEEDs geochat to be offline (or would love it) so he can view the map and data offline (like Frontline SMS does).

  7. GeoChat SMS only display member name. The Cam RRT would like to know what to do if they want to know the member phone number. Let's say they receive SMS from the group member and want to call to the person for more detail.

  8. We have heard this request before, but today from Ghana/Alex we heard it again that, for GeoChat inputs to be more useful, they need to be structured, managed and archived and viewed aggregately on a map. This use case (not the first one we are pursuign with them) is to have people below subdistrict level send in health reports over SMS.

  9. Ghana/Alex cares so much about location that they want it to be a prompted message or some sort of requirement. For instance, "what is your address?" He also mentioned a big issue is mispelling location so having a village code system would help. We have not identified a specific pilot yet for this feature so I am not sure we want to implement it yet until there is a concrete scenario. (MJ)

  10. One serious problem of the current approach to groups is that it's extremely easy to send a message to the wrong group by mistake. This can have serious consequences depending on the privacy and/or security involved in the "leaked" information.

The repro is quite easy. If you belong to group A and just joined group B, your new default group will be B. Now, just replying to an incoming message from group A, without prefixing it with the group name, will cause the message to be sent to group B, rather than A (which you were replying). This is due…

  11. When someone sends a message in from the field without a location, I
can give it a location (drag on the map) and give it a name if I know
there is a name associated. Maybe only administrator can do this.

The issue is...it could be easier to assign people on the map then to
have people in remote areas have to figure out their lat/long if their
village is not on google earth.

  12. It would be of great benefit if GeoChat could also support altitude, beyond lat-long. My understanding, altitude is not yet standardized in microformats—a problem for hydrology, climate change, etc.

    Thanks,

  13. 1) Single language translate on web interface
The first idea is to be able to have the messages translated into another language, at least the Google translate languages, so you can work in the field with a team working in a different language (or, if you are like me, you know a language but perhaps not that well). I would be working with women in the Congo who are texting in French, and I would write them in English (translated back to French).

    2) Multi-language translate on web interface - so you can communicat with people in many languages.

  15. Allow users to download FrontlineSMS (www.frontlineSMS.org) and use it as the mechanism to send/receive messages from geochat (in addition to the standalone gateway that is available for download in the gateways page)

  17. An RSS feed is a very broad way of sending messages to the group. Can we add a way target messages better by specifying a 'radius' for the subscribers? This way users would only get the item alert if they are (for e.g.) within 5 miles of the positions the article refers to.
If the incoming RSS is not a geo-RSS, maybe geochat could try to associate tentative locations using GeoNames as well, but alert the user that the geocoding may not b reliable.

  18. Allow users to send structured information to the group - either manually following a template or as a means for a program (such as JavaROSA) to submit information. Obviously this information should be exportable in some format such as CSV, XML or synchronized with a database (MySQL, Access, or Excel) owned by the user.

  20. SPOT Trackers (www.findmespot.com) are devices that integrate a GPS with a satellite transceiver so you can publish your location via email and SMS and an associated OK, HELP or 911 message; and optionally sign up for evacuation insurance.

This feature would allow users of SPOT trackers that are under the satellite coverage areas to update their geochat position by pressing the OK or the HELP button.
